I am selling hosting through a direct marketing approach I run my own business and have little money currently but am one hell of a sales man. I would like to find the best service provider to resell from. My sales will have every type of hosting need from small business, car lot to big companies requiring big sites and options.
What is the most advantageouse way to become a web hosting service provider. erikparti@thestormmgroup.ca?
Hi
Hosting is not profitable if your running the entirse infastructure by yourself. So what I did was I took a brandable service from a company called www.netandhost.com. I selected a pay as you go model which was cost effective and I didnt have to invest more. You get the a online interface to fully brand your service. You also get s sign up interface which you can give to your customers. By this you can start recving payments online and all service of your customers are activated instantly. So this means you can concentrate more on your sales. Your end users can be given with a control panel by which they can manage anything without contacting you support. You can also integrate a payment gateway in mins. All services can be activated online by yourself and your customers thru web. The company remains totally anonymous. You also get a anonymous free nameserver or if you pay little more you also get your own name server. So the general idea is
1. You invest very less and start your sale
2. You pay as you grow
3. You concentrate on your sales
4. You get more product lines. I believe they are adding around 30 brandable products in near future
5. You can compete with very large providers from day one.
Try contacting sales@netandhost.com for more details

What is the best web site host (best bang for a buck) for a small online business just getting off the ground?
I would say that there are many variables to consider. What features do you seek? What is your budget? You need to find one that suits you. I would suggest that you take a look at several before making a decision. First compare feature by feature then dollar for dollar. That will ensure that you get the %26quot;best bang for a/your buck%26quot;. You can take a look at the one that I use for comparison. http://www.tobuildyour.com

Is starting a SiteBuilder Web-Business a good idea?
Hi all,
I am starting a hosting business that hides the user from the complexities of setting up the website backend and only providing a dedicated website builder only (based on swsoft sitebuilder)
services to include:
- domain and email setup for the user
- easy to use website builder
- full support of email and builder products
- targeted towards small/medium business that are not computer savvy
- website fully hosted
My question is, will a business like this likely generate sales enough to make the business profitable? Is the market way too saturated with businesses homestead, moonfruit, citymax, web hosters providing sitebuilders, and web designers?
Also, are there any additional services I can provide to bring in more revenue apart from custom webdesign, or banner/logo editing?
SR5k!
Is starting a SiteBuilder Web-Business a good idea?
Heck no! There are a ton of small businesses that want a low cost website to promote themselves and their services.
So, that said - you%26#039;re on the right path - and you HAVE TO MARKET YOURSELF! Have a great website for the hosting/design business and get the word out. One thing important to market w/ custom services is SEO - Search Engine Optimization - to get them high in the rankings for here Yahoo and Google. You do that by using your keywords in META tags and having good content.
The best of luck!
Is starting a SiteBuilder Web-Business a good idea?
Once you started finished it.
Reply:depends... If you know HTML you can make a much more powerfull website than using a site-builder... witch the person doing buisness can just start doing.
and if i know right.. i dont think you can really show dynamic webpages as much as with php with a sitebuilder...
Reply:Your project is ambitious.
The market is saturated with amateurs and cheap design services.
The market is saturated with computer illiterate businesses that believe that %26quot;THE WEB%26quot; is the miracle solution for their lack of %26quot;business skills%26quot;.
The web is saturated with %26quot;personal pages%26quot; offering no interest whatsoever to anyone but the ego-trip of the owner.
Making revenue with your project?
Doubtfull, seeing the competition.
Offer a very large bandwidth server host, LAMP, on several linked PCs, directly connected to an ultra high speed fiber optic to the web and... maybe...
Offer RSS feeds (it%26#039;s the fab at the moment) and video broacast (MMMMB of bandwidth required).
Offer special hosting for porn, chats and wikies.
Offer special hosting for spammers.
You need a BIG room with loads of very fast PCs with APACHE.
Good luck.
Reply:I am a consumer of website hosting products. I currently use DiscountASP.net as my provider, but I know that there are a bunch out there competing for my website dollars.
I would not try to compete with these guys. If you are like me (low investment capital) then I would suggest becoming a VAR (Value Added Retailer). Target a market (i.e., School Websites), develop a product using the tools you like. Then you become the middle man and isolate the users from the providers (and collect a fee for your troubles).
Please be warned, this is no easy path and you will need to say good-bye to sleep for awhile, but once you get your product up, running and debugged, you may find yourself with a nice little web-based business.
Good luck!

I teach a lot of small business classes and always recommend online builders to the non-technical among my students. It%26#039;s true that many have difficulty even using the simplest tools. So if you could develop a very straight-forward builder, with fairly high functionality, you may have a winner. I think the space is still evolving. Presently, I%26#039;m using SquareSpace for my blockbeta.com website. I was using Dreamweaver, but since I%26#039;m more of a marketer than a developer, I%26#039;m enjoying focusing on creating content, rather than the backend. It%26#039;s one of the best I%26#039;ve seen so far, but it still requires at least a little bit of technical knowledge. You could offer a decent tool (or license one), then offer technical and maintenance assistance as a value-add.
Is starting a SiteBuilder Web-Business a good idea?
Just from my standpoint, your business sounds like a great idea.. And I could see tons of small businesses taking advantage of it..
Now as far as the competition goes, I have no idea what your up against..
Reply:There is always a market for something like that if it is marketed in a good way.
You can also offer the purchase of Stock Images for your clients, as well as business phone numbers (redirected phone service)
This can work, just give it a go!

You see, setting up a website is only a small part of the battle to make money on the Internet. You MUST get people to your site. For that you will need to market - and that means learning all about site submission, pay for click ads, etc.
All successful web sales companies have a geek (or several) somewhere in their ranks - either become one or you will have to hire one (search for SEO companies).

PHP Form Script Needed to Install on Yahoo Webhosting Standard Account?
I have a website hosted on Yahoo Small Business Web Hosting and I need a good PHP Form Script that I can use with Dreamweaver CS3 on Apple Mac OS X. Can anyone recommend a free script I can install on Yahoo Web Hosting that has PHP/MySQL integration? Also, does the Dreamweaver CS3 Developer Toolkit extensions include anything like this, I already have this but have no idea how to use it? Please advise, thanks.
PHP Form Script Needed to Install on Yahoo Webhosting Standard Account?
I haven%26#039;t had luck myself with finding a good PHP script, but you can still create the form in Dreamweaver CS3, using the Spry tools if you prefer, and link them to a perl script. The most popular one is the formail.pl script, which is well commented and easy enough to customize to your needs. This site has a good tutorial on using it: http://www.creativepro.com/story/howto/2...

Download Mambo and refer to some of the scripts. It is a goodway of having light with PhP and absolutely good PhP coding. You can also participate in the Mambo forums. For more infor Google the info or use Yahoo!

Looking for tool to maintain php created website?
I took on a website created in php and now hosted at yahoo. I can (and have) edit the php files to change text, but I want to redesign the tabs and other aspects of the site. Should I do sitebuilder? or someone suggested Joomlah cm? It is a pretty simple site with text info, and form (applications, enquiries) submission (no animation, no registration). For background I am not a web developer, but feel I can handle a wysiwg tool and get addl help when I need it. I have a laptop running XP. I%26#039;d prefer to stay hosted by yahoo so would like something compatible, but I am not opposed to moving hosting if need be. I did look through all the questions in small business web hosting category already, but didn%26#039;t see this specific question so I thought I%26#039;d ask in the broader audience. Any help would be appreciated!
Looking for tool to maintain php created website?
When it comes to a CMS, Drupal and Joomla are pretty neck-and-neck these days in terms of popularity. Though my vote would be for Drupal, not just for features but also elegance of design from a software engineering perspective. They just added a lot of really good new features in version 6.0 recently.
For actually working with PHP code, and having a visual tool as well, I recommend a combination of NVU and ActiveState Komodo Edit. Both are free.

How do i build a smart web site structure on Yahoo! small business?
I have a site that will leverage both http and https, and is hosted on Yahoo! small business services. I want to avoid the message %26quot;this page contains sercure and nonsecure ...%26quot; when a user visits the secure section of the site.
At first glance, I figured that I could place all of the required content into a folder under %26lt;root%26gt;/ssl and everything would be just fine. However, that poses some serious content management issues.
So, if I want to only maintain content in one place, can I place all of it under %26lt;root%26gt;/ssl and be just fine? If so, how do I modify the include_path to point to something like %26lt;riit%26gt;/ssl/include vs. the standard %26lt;root%26gt;/include?
Am I missing something?

all your links to images, etc. need to be secure. If you have anything that is from an http request it will throw that message. Everythign must be https://

Yahoo! Small Business?
I purchased web hosting from Yahoo!%26#039;s small business section. I e-mailed them a question, and 1 day and a half, no reply. This is unacceptable. The average response time is 24hours, which is still, unacceptable. Is there a backlog of e-mails or something? Please, let me know.
Yahoo! Small Business?
Hi Ben,
I understand your frustration, and you%26#039;re right that a day and a half is a long time to wait for an email response. We typically are able to respond to questions much more quickly, but unfortunately, we experienced a glitch in one of our email servers this week that caused emails like yours to back up. We have fixed the problem and are working overtime to reply to all of the backed-up emails as soon as possible.
If you need an answer more quickly, you might want to just give us a call. To do that, visit our contact page: http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/contactus... Here we%26#039;ll ask you to pick the topic that matches your issue, then provide the toll-free number at which we can best help you (to speed up response time, this number is reserved for account holders only, so I won%26#039;t print it here). We should be able to resolve your issue quickly.
Thank you for your patience.

This one is for small business owners. Not web design firms please. How much would you pay for a web site?
How much would you be willing to pay for a website that is more than just basic. I know you can set up a free website or design your own and host it for about 10 bucks a month. But are there small business owners who would like to have a professional website (that can handle a shopping cart and credit cards, provide search functionality, let users register on the site, etc.) but are put off since it is more complicated than what they can do on Front Page and more expensive than what they can afford to have a web design company do?
This one is for small business owners. Not web design firms please. How much would you pay for a web site?
Hard to say, because I would love to know this as well.
I could not afford $1,200 for just the design, but there are aspects that I would like.
I would like it if a company could augment what I already have and charge per item. To explain a little better, I can do the backgrounds, the titles, the links, the content, I can even provide pictures, but I would want someone who could help do more with the pictures than just rollovers.
For this, I might pay $50 to $75 - There is no design work and it is a one time fee, unless I change the pictures.
For a complete package like you are talking about - with shopping cart, I guess, a 20+ page site around $50 a page.
I personally, still could not afford it with how small my business is. It would take me moving to the next level with an actual location and a small business loan to think about it.
What you talk about is great and I am interested - visit www.inspiredtouches.com, but like I said - my payout would be limited right now.
This one is for small business owners. Not web design firms please. How much would you pay for a web site?
in U.S. it would cost 49.95 one time and 49.95 a month.
Reply:We paid $1250 for our website, although the %26quot;designer%26quot; really wasn%26#039;t a %26quot;designer%26quot;, but a tecky who knew how to program. He was kind of new at it. We definitely got our money%26#039;s worth, but take a look at our website and see if it%26#039;s close to what you want. I also got a basic on-line quote from another web designer, and it was about $1200 for the parameters I chose, however, I%26#039;m sure we wouldn%26#039;t have gotten as much as we got with the one we went with. Good luck!
Oh yea - it%26#039;s about $100/year + for hosting.
Reply:If you can afford $20 to $40 a month, you can find some good webmasters.
But I highly suggest that you go and study it your self. It%26#039;s very simple! I made my own site at http://www.iandelcarmen.com and many more other sites: http://www.digibook.ph , http://www.digibooknetwork.com , http://www.MobileEbooks.net ...
If I post all my sites here, it would consume so much space. You may just visit my site http://www.iandelcarmen.com and check it out. I made in in just 5 minutes and I learned just by reading some nice books. Contact me at Help Desk and I%26#039;ll send you some free books on this subject...

Looking to start a small internet business. I need a decent web host that helps buld website.?
Hello,
You can try http://www.dreamhost.com , a respectable company and has a good support, uptime with over 700 servers. They give you 20GB Space and 1 Terrabyte of Bandwidth, and a free domain for a good price ($119/year), and with the promo code HOT75 you get $75 off to any yearly and monthly plans you purchase. They have everything you need.
Which means, with that promo code, you get $119 - $75 = $44/year
and $44 / 12 months is only $3.67 a month for that great deal!

SQL, PHP or Cold Fusion - in Yahoo Small Business Hosting?
I have to program several dynamic pages with self updating databases for a car dealer whose web design I do. It%26#039;s for automatically updating both new and used inventories on a nightly basis. They are hosted on Yahoo Small Business and I%26#039;m wondering if anyone has a good idea as to which server technology I should use for it.
SQL, PHP or Cold Fusion - in Yahoo Small Business Hosting?
SQL is definitely a must since that is the language you use for querying/updating your database.
Regarding the programming language, I have used Cold Fusion and PHP. I prefer PHP. For one, it is totally free while Cold Fusion is not. Second, PHP is very very easy to learn and get stared using right away. Cold Fusion (it%26#039;s been a while) had a higher learning curve. You will also find a lot of Web resources available and you can go to any bookstore and find numerous books on PHP to get started.

Are server-side includes (SSI) available for Yahoo Small Business Hosting accounts?
I don%26#039;t want to use SiteBuilder to build my site within Yahoo Small Business Hosting and need to know if I can use my own web site template that includes server side include technology (SSI) for such items as a header/footer/menus/etc.
Are server-side includes (SSI) available for Yahoo Small Business Hosting accounts?
I don%26#039;t know if they are expressly allowed but I do know for certain that at least the include file ssi tag works. however, it will garble stuff like Yahoo store-tag links so your mileage may vary.

MEXICANS IN CHICAGO: A NEW KIND OF POLITICS
Influence on both sides of the border
Activists%26#039; political power is rising in Chicago and their homeland, as they seek reforms through marches and money
Advertisement
By Antonio Olivo and Oscar Avila
Tribune staff reporters
April 6, 2007
To outsiders, the men and women gathered inside a sleepy West Side restaurant may have seemed unlikely power brokers: a janitor, a real estate agent and others hardly known outside their circuit of neighborhood dances and back-yard barbecues.
Jose Luis Gutierrez, who plotted strategy with the group as a soccer match flickered on a nearby TV, was himself a wholesale grocer until last year.
But Gutierrez is now a top aide to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and he was joined at the table by leaders of Chicago-area Mexican immigrant clubs, the engines behind a new political movement that is making itself felt from Illinois to Michoacan.
Gutierrez received smiling nods when he likened the political muscle of the region%26#039;s 563,000 Mexican immigrants to the power of Irish-Americans in the 19th and 20th Centuries, who came to control the Chicago machine.
In May, the strength of Mexicans will be on display when many of the region%26#039;s 300 immigrant clubs -- known as %26quot;hometown associations%26quot; -- will help organize a march in downtown Chicago a year after their political coming-out party, demonstrations that flooded the Loop last spring and charged the national immigration debate.
For decades Mexican hometown associations have functioned as social networks whose members pooled their money earned here to help build new schools or churches back in Mexico.
But leaders in Chicago%26#039;s largest immigrant group have a more ambitious worldview than their predecessors, even more than the ethnic blocs that preceded them decades ago.
Some, like Gutierrez, wield growing influence in both countries. One morning, he%26#039;s unveiling a blueprint for more immigrant services in Illinois as director of the state%26#039;s Office of New Americans Policy and Advocacy. The next night, he%26#039;s brainstorming with activists in his home state of Michoacan about a slate of candidates for Mexico%26#039;s congress.
An active role in Mexican politics might seem at odds with building political influence here. But Gutierrez and others say they form a budding new political consciousness among Mexican immigrants -- a %26quot;third nation%26quot; of sorts that transcends the border, advancing the community%26#039;s cause on both sides.
%26quot;The nation-state concept is changing,%26quot; said Gutierrez, 46, who came to Chicago in 1986 and led one of the Midwest%26#039;s largest federations of hometown associations. %26quot;You don%26#039;t have to say, `I am Mexican,%26#039; or, `I am American.%26#039; You can be a good Mexican citizen and a good American citizen and not have that be a conflict of interest. Sovereignty is flexible.%26quot;
That concept worries some U.S. officials and scholars who see the dual loyalty as undermining the assimilation of Mexican immigrants.
Irish, German and Polish immigrants eventually melded into Chicago%26#039;s landscape, their ties to their native soil largely sentimental. But Mexican immigrants today are linked to their homeland like no group before, scholars say, connected by NAFTA, satellite TV, the Internet, cell phones and cheap non-stop flights.
In Mexico, their power stems from the nearly $25 billion these immigrants send home every year, the country%26#039;s second-highest source of income behind oil.
Their political influence surfaces in places like Teloloapan, far up in the cactus-filled hills of the state of Guerrero, where a Chicago restaurateur helped build new roads and business. Grateful townspeople elected him mayor in a landslide.
In the U.S., immigrants%26#039; power is driven by numbers and a growing deftness at the levers of this country%26#039;s political machinery. That recently manifested itself in a fledgling political action committee called Mexicans for Political Progress, which raised $23,000 for Blagojevich%26#039;s re-election and rallied volunteers to walk precincts during November%26#039;s election.
An unfolding movement
Fabian Morales, a soft-spoken Realtor with a well-clipped mustache, stands at the center of the unfolding movement. He handled logistics for three massive immigration marches in Chicago last year -- including a four-day walk to suburban Batavia -- and co-founded Mexicans for Political Progress.
After coming to Chicago in 1970, Morales helped launch one of the city%26#039;s then-few hometown clubs, devoted to his tiny native village of Xonacatla, Guerrero.
Back then, Xonacatla was without roads, potable water or electricity. It was a slow journey from other towns by foot or horseback, Morales said. The club members in Chicago resolved to change that.
Collecting $50 to $100 at a time, Morales and others raised enough through barbecues and door-to-door soliciting to replace a house used for worship services with a towering marble church that rises from the green hillside.
Morales has since helped develop CONFEMEX, an umbrella organization for most of the hometown clubs in the Midwest. Among other things, the group is a central voice in economic development in Mexico, representing an estimated $340 million in projects generated by U.S.-based hometown associations in the last five years, according to Mexican federal officials.
%26quot;We want to focus on creating more jobs there so they don%26#039;t have to think about emigrating,%26quot; Morales said.
The rising activity of hometown associations caught the eye of the Mexican government, which eventually created a %26quot;3-for-1%26quot; matching project, where federal, state and local governments split the cost of a new bridge or computer center with the U.S.-based groups.
Those projects have given Mexican immigrants %26quot;a great moral authority%26quot; in their homeland, as well as political cachet, said Carlos Gonzalez, executive director of the Institute for Mexicans in the Exterior, or IME, a Mexican federal government agency that fosters stronger ties with expatriates.
%26quot;During the 1970s, [Mexicans] called the people who left Mexico and acclimated to the U.S. %26#039;pocho,%26#039; which, if you look in the dictionary, means %26#039;spoiled fruit,%26#039;
%26quot; Gonzalez said. %26quot;The change we%26#039;ve seen in the public perception of Mexicans in the exterior has been 180 degrees.%26quot;
In 2006, citizens abroad were allowed to vote in Mexican presidential elections for the first time. Leaders are also pushing for changes that would allow expatriates to vote in local elections and even hold elective offices while residing abroad.
Recently, Gutierrez and others persuaded Michoacan to become the first state in Mexico to extend voting rights to expatriates. Their rationale: Almost half of those born in Michoacan, Zacatecas and several other Mexican states now live in the U.S.
Timoteo %26quot;Alex%26quot; Manjarrez, 44, is among a small but growing number of Mexican immigrants making a bolder claim in their motherland.
Arriving from his native town of Teloloapan, Guerrero, in 1980, Manjarrez spent 19 years in Chicago. The stocky, boyish-looking immigrant worked for years as a dishwasher at the Columbia Yacht Club and, eventually, became owner of three Mexican restaurants in the city.
Fulfilling a desire shared by many immigrants, Manjarrez moved back to his native town in 1999 with enough money for his family to live comfortably.
But the place he had longed for all those years was still frustratingly poor, despite the investments Manjarrez%26#039;s hometown club made in new roads and other improvements.
Manjarrez, who holds both Mexican and U.S. citizenship, settled in and quickly built a new health club and a hacienda-style restaurant named La Condesa, after the three he still owns in Chicago.
In 2004, he ran for mayor of Teloloapan. With long-distance backing from his hometown club friends in Chicago, who sent money and telephoned friends and local officials on his behalf, Manjarrez won handily.
%26#039;The city that works%26#039;
Since taking office, the man who sees Mayor Richard M. Daley as a political role model has pushed to remake Teloloapan into a Mexican version of %26quot;the city that works.%26quot;
The effort includes newly paved streets, a recreation center that replaces a local swamp known as %26quot;black waters,%26quot; and a towering hotel being built privately by Manjarrez%26#039;s family.
Next to a new medical clinic, a donated Chicago ambulance sits in the parking lot. Its emblem has been painted over, but it serves as a reminder of the continued links Manjarrez has to his former city, where he maintains a home near Midway Airport, votes in U.S. elections and checks in on his businesses.
Aurelio Santamaria Bahena, mayor of a town near Manjarrez%26#039;s called Tlapehuala, labeled such changes %26quot;a blessing%26quot; for an area of Mexico dominated by crumbling lean-to houses and children in bare feet pulling bone-thin donkeys.
But, as with other parts of the country where the immigrant handprint is deepening, the introduction of U.S.-style governance has also bred resentment.
Local leaders of Manjarrez%26#039;s own Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) are trying to drum him out of office, arguing he is too brash and condescending. The mayor counters the fight is about his efforts to take away %26quot;a plate of corruption that they%26#039;ve been able to eat from for years.%26quot;
The conflict was an uncomfortable backdrop during a recent PRD strategy meeting at a restaurant in Chilpancingo, Guerrero%26#039;s capital. Headlines that morning featured a march against Manjarrez, orchestrated by his opponents.
%26quot;People see you as an outsider,%26quot; a worried Santamaria cautioned Manjarrez. %26quot;People don%26#039;t think you see things as they are here.%26quot;
Manjarrez, wearing a black %26quot;La Condesa%26quot; windbreaker, patted his friend on the back and smiled. He had a media plan, one that might have made Daley proud.
%26quot;We%26#039;ll publish photos of the streets of Teloloapan before and after I came into office,%26quot; Manjarrez said. %26quot;And, we%26#039;ll ask the people: `Which would you prefer?%26#039;
%26quot;
That same week, Mexican immigrants from the U.S. and Canada met in Mexico City, as members of an advisory council created by the Mexican government.
With a brash American style, they soon escalated their advice to demands, the members%26#039; voices echoing through the meeting hall.
Morales, the Chicago Realtor, and about 100 other council members pushed Mexico to lobby the U.S. harder on immigration reform. They chastised their hosts for not creating more jobs. Buttonholing federal legislators in hallways, they reminded elected officials how much their districts relied on money sent from the U.S.
They want %26#039;results now%26#039;
Gregorio Luke, a blond member of the council from Los Angeles partial to designer suits, observed that this kind of behavior wouldn%26#039;t exist in a purely Mexican forum, where deference toward authority guides nearly all dialogue.
%26quot;These people come here speaking Spanish, but they%26#039;re negotiating as Americans,%26quot; said Luke, a museum director who once oversaw cultural affairs at the Los Angeles Mexican Consulate. %26quot;They want to see results now.%26quot;
The meeting of the advisory council also illustrated the provocative overlap of Mexican and American political action.
In addition to all-day strategy sessions on how to improve Mexico, council members brainstormed over late-night drinks on next moves in the fight for U.S. immigration reform. Many members had used their existing e-mail network to coordinate simultaneous demonstrations in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities.
Though not active participants in the U.S. immigrant movement, Mexican officials urged their compatriots to keep on fighting.
%26quot;Let there be no barriers or walls between Mexicans here on the inside and the outside,%26quot; former Mexican President Vicente Fox told the group, referring to a 2006 U.S. law that allows for a 700-mile fence to be built at the border. The audience stood and cheered.
The idea that the Mexican government might be helping its nationals shape U.S. politics has raised red flags, both in the halls of academia and in the more volatile world of talk radio and the Internet.
Robert Leiken, director of the immigration and national security program at the right-leaning Nixon Center in Washington, argued that binational activism among Mexican immigrants is bad for both countries. In the U.S., the meetings in Spanish and the often-passionate interest in Mexico%26#039;s future hinder assimilation, he said.
In Mexico, the relationship to hometown associations fosters an unhealthy economic dependence on U.S. remittances.
%26quot;If I went out to Pilsen and spent some time with people from a hometown association, I%26#039;d think these are really cool people,%26quot; Leiken said. But, %26quot;Standing back and looking at this from a social policy standpoint, I see some real problems.%26quot;
James McCann, a Purdue University political science professor, found that immigrants interested in Mexican affairs were more likely to participate in U.S. politics. He helped interview about 1,100 Mexican immigrants and found that hometown clubs promoted activism.
%26quot;The conventional wisdom is that any transnational engagement is going to suck the oxygen out of your civic life in the States,%26quot; McCann said. %26quot;But it seems that if you open a new avenue of expression in Mexico, that new avenue might pay some other dividends in the U.S.%26quot;
Some of those dividends went directly to the Blagojevich campaign last fall, when the governor found himself being serenaded by a trumpet-playing mariachi band inside the Hacienda Tecalitlan restaurant on the Near Northwest Side.
Near a trickling courtyard fountain, Morales praised the governor in Spanish at the kickoff dinner for the Mexicans for Political Progress PAC. While Morales once raised money for his hometown with $1 tamales, the price here was as much as $500 a plate.
%26quot;Let us demonstrate our political power by voting in the election, by voting for our friends interested in the prosperity of Mexicans. Friends like Gov. Rod Blagojevich!%26quot; Morales told the crowd.
Blagojevich, who speaks a hint of Spanish, took the microphone and shouted: %26quot;Viva Chivas!%26quot; a reference to a popular Mexican soccer team.
When the laughter and applause subsided, he switched to English and added: %26quot;By organizing, you are empowering a community. Your voice will be heard.%26quot;
The mood is darker in northwest suburban Carpentersville, where a growing Mexican community has rallied in large numbers in the face of a local backlash against undocumented immigrants.
Last fall, about 3,000 Mexican immigrants and their supporters turned up outside Carpentersville%26#039;s City Hall in an unexpected show of opposition to a proposed ordinance that would penalize landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and employers who hire them. The crowd was so riled a vote on the ordinance was postponed and has yet to be taken.
The quick response came largely due to the hometown association representing the village of La Purisima, Michoacan, local activists said. The club turned to its telephone list of 400 families, said Salvador Balleno, the group%26#039;s president.
The turnout was a victory, but it has not deterred Carpentersville trustees from other proposals that would allow local police to trigger deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants and make English the village%26#039;s official language.
And as Balleno has struggled to register voters and rally volunteers for this month%26#039;s village elections, even sympathetic politicians have seemed hesitant to link themselves too closely with the hometown association. Balleno now fears the village%26#039;s hard-liners have the upper hand, intimidating some of the immigrants who protested last fall.
%26quot;The [club] members know that if these people stay [in office] it is going to affect their kids,%26quot; Balleno said, sounding anxious that an opportunity was slipping through his fingers.
Jose Artemio Arreola, a key organizer of next month%26#039;s march in Chicago, has been actively monitoring the battle in Carpentersville.
He sees the activity there as part of a plan to create a political empire for Mexican immigrants, one linking hometown associations in Chicago and other cities to labor unions and Mexico%26#039;s congress.
His strategy includes moving back to his native state of Michoacan to run for congress there, something Arreola never imagined doing when he left a town overrun by poverty and ruled by local drug kingpins.
He got his start in Chicago working in a plastics factory. Frustrated by the union representation there, he ran for shop steward and won. Unable to speak English, he relied on his bilingual co-workers to help him negotiate union contracts.
He has since become a school janitor in Oak Park. The position pays little, but it has allowed Arreola to climb the ranks of the Service Employees International Union, where he has become key in that union%26#039;s national efforts to tap further into the country%26#039;s exploding Mexican immigrant workforce.
All the while, Arreola has used the sharp elbows and old-school union tactics acquired in Chicago to become a power broker in his hometown of Acuitzio del Canje.
He started in 2004 when the local mayor refused to back projects proposed by his hometown association. Arreola, a burly backslapper partial to gold neck chains, recalled thinking: %26quot;I need to take them out.%26quot;
He recruited a teacher to run for mayor in the Mexican town. Arreola then brought back a town phone book and, with others in Chicago, called voters one by one, promising a stream of U.S. investment if his candidate won. The incumbent opted for traditional rallies and car tours through town with a bullhorn.
More than two years later, sitting in a Pilsen restaurant, Arreola opened a laptop computer and showed off the fruits of what proved to be an easy victory. Pictures of a new retirement home popped onto the screen, one featuring a grinning Arreola at a groundbreaking ceremony.
Another showed a new computer lab with 40 computers for local schoolchildren, an investment in the future of Acuitzio del Canje.
The town%26#039;s name comes from an 1865 decision to make it the site for a %26quot;canje,%26quot; or exchange of prisoners between warring Mexican and French troops.
Sitting deep in the dusty mountains of Michoacan, it was neutral ground back then, Arreola explained, territory that didn%26#039;t fully belong to either country but, in some ways, belonged to both.

MEXICANS IN CHICAGO: A NEW KIND OF POLITICS
Influence on both sides of the border
Activists%26#039; political power is rising in Chicago and their homeland, as they seek reforms through marches and money

%26quot;The nation-state concept is changing,%26quot; said Gutierrez, 46, who came to Chicago in 1986 and led one of the Midwest%26#039;s largest federations of hometown associations. %26quot;You don%26#039;t have to say, `I am Mexican,%26#039; or, `I am American.%26#039; You can be a good Mexican citizen and a good American citizen and not have that be a conflict of interest. Sovereignty is flexible.%26quot;
%26quot;During the 1970s, [Mexicans] called the people who left Mexico and acclimated to the U.S. %26#039;pocho,%26#039; which, if you look in the dictionary, means %26#039;spoiled fruit,%26#039;
%26quot; Gonzalez said. %26quot;The change we%26#039;ve seen in the public perception of Mexicans in the exterior has been 180 degrees.%26quot;
%26#039;The city that works%26#039;
Since taking office, the man who sees Mayor Richard M. Daley as a political role model has pushed to remake Teloloapan into a Mexican version of %26quot;the city that works.%26quot;
Local leaders of Manjarrez%26#039;s own Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) are trying to drum him out of office, arguing he is too brash and condescending. The mayor counters the fight is about his efforts to take away %26quot;a plate of corruption that they%26#039;ve been able to eat from for years.%26quot;
The conflict was an uncomfortable backdrop during a recent PRD strategy meeting at a restaurant in Chilpancingo, Guerrero%26#039;s capital. Headlines that morning featured a march against Manjarrez, orchestrated by his opponents.
%26quot;People see you as an outsider,%26quot; a worried Santamaria cautioned Manjarrez. %26quot;People don%26#039;t think you see things as they are here.%26quot;
Manjarrez, wearing a black %26quot;La Condesa%26quot; windbreaker, patted his friend on the back and smiled. He had a media plan, one that might have made Daley proud.
%26quot;We%26#039;ll publish photos of the streets of Teloloapan before and after I came into office,%26quot; Manjarrez said. %26quot;And, we%26#039;ll ask the people: `Which would you prefer?%26#039;
%26quot;
They want %26#039;results now%26#039;
Gregorio Luke, a blond member of the council from Los Angeles partial to designer suits, observed that this kind of behavior wouldn%26#039;t exist in a purely Mexican forum, where deference toward authority guides nearly all dialogue.
%26quot;These people come here speaking Spanish, but they%26#039;re negotiating as Americans,%26quot; said Luke, a museum director who once oversaw cultural affairs at the Los Angeles Mexican Consulate. %26quot;They want to see results now.%26quot;
%26quot;If I went out to Pilsen and spent some time with people from a hometown association, I%26#039;d think these are really cool people,%26quot; Leiken said. But, %26quot;Standing back and looking at this from a social policy standpoint, I see some real problems.%26quot;
James McCann, a Purdue University political science professor, found that immigrants interested in Mexican affairs were more likely to participate in U.S. politics. He helped interview about 1,100 Mexican immigrants and found that hometown clubs promoted activism.
%26quot;The conventional wisdom is that any transnational engagement is going to suck the oxygen out of your civic life in the States,%26quot; McCann said. %26quot;But it seems that if you open a new avenue of expression in Mexico, that new avenue might pay some other dividends in the U.S.%26quot;
When the laughter and applause subsided, he switched to English and added: %26quot;By organizing, you are empowering a community. Your voice will be heard.%26quot;

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc. (Nasdaq: HAYZ) today reported financial results for its fiscal year ended January 31, 2007. The results were in line with preliminary results announced on March 16, 2007 and with guidance the Company provided to investors in December 2006.
For the fiscal year, the automotive and commercial highway wheels and components maker reported sales of $2.06 billion, up 5.1% from sales of $1.96 billion in the prior fiscal year. Earnings from operations were $4.8 million for fiscal 2006, compared with a year earlier loss from operations of $215.2 million, which included $185.5 million of goodwill impairment charges. Capital expenditures for the fiscal year were $80.8 million, down from $95.2 million a year earlier. The foregoing results exclude the suspension components business reported as discontinued operations, which had sales of $230 million, a loss from operations of $46.0 million and capital expenditures of $9.1 million.
The Company reported a net loss of $166.9 million for fiscal 2006, compared to a net loss of $457.5 million for fiscal 2005. The Company reported a loss from continuing operations of $120.9 million, compared with a loss from continuing operations of $287.1 million a year earlier.
Adjusted EBITDA for fiscal 2006 (including the suspension components business) was $188.6 million, up 7.3% from $175.7 million a year earlier. For the full fiscal year, Hayes Lemmerz reported free cash flow of negative $9.1 million, excluding the impact of the Company%26#039;s securitization program, an improvement of $71.6 million from a year earlier.
%26quot;Hayes Lemmerz is a much stronger company today than it was five years ago,%26quot; said Curtis Clawson, President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Hayes Lemmerz.
%26quot;We have significantly decreased our dependence on U.S. markets, and continue to grow our international business, especially in Asia. By divesting non-core businesses and focusing on high growth/high return markets, we are continuing to execute our strategic business plan and our drive toward profitability and positive free cash flow. Sales to GM, Ford and Chrysler in the U.S., excluding discontinued operations, now account for only about 18% of global sales. Given the extremely difficult conditions in our marketplace, our results for 2006 are encouraging.%26quot;
As previously announced, as part of its continuing profit-enhancing initiatives, the Company completed the sale of two aluminum suspension components plants in February 2007. %26quot;These divestitures further reduce our dependence on the North American automotive market and free us from a very capital-intensive business,%26quot; said Mr. Clawson.
%26quot;Our new business wins point the way toward our future. We won over $575 million in annualized sales in 2006, of which 75% is international business,%26quot; Mr. Clawson said. %26quot;We continue to win with Japanese and Korean manufacturers, including Toyota, Hyundai, Nissan and Honda, both in the U.S. and internationally. We continue to win new business with our European partners, and in the U.S. markets our new business wins diversify our product mix with more crossover and passenger vehicles,%26quot; he said.
As previously announced, the Company锟絪 board of directors has approved a rights offering for existing shareholders, for up to $180 million of common stock. Proceeds will be used to repurchase the Company锟絪 10.5% Senior Notes. The offering must be approved by shareholders at a special meeting scheduled for May 4, 2007. %26quot;By raising new equity capital and retiring high-cost debt, we are de-leveraging, strengthening our balance sheet and significantly improving free cash flow,%26quot; Mr. Clawson commented.
For the full fiscal year 2007, Hayes Lemmerz expects to achieve sales of about $2.1 billion, Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $195 to $205 million, positive free cash flow (excluding securitization impact) and capital expenditures of approximately $85 to $90 million.
Conference Call
Hayes Lemmerz will host a telephone conference call to discuss the Company%26#039;s full fiscal year 2006 financial results this morning, at 10:00 a.m. (ET).
To participate by phone, please dial 10 minutes prior to the call: (888) 295-5935 from the United States and Canada; (706) 758-0212 from outside the United States. Callers should ask to be connected to Hayes Lemmerz earnings conference call, Conference ID # 2107451. The conference call will be accompanied by a slide presentation, which can be accessed through the Company%26#039;s web site, in the Investor Kit presentations section at http://www.hayes-lemmerz.com/investor_ki...

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Information
EBITDA, a measure used by management to measure operating performance, is defined as earnings from operations plus depreciation and amortization. Adjusted EBITDA is defined as EBITDA further adjusted to exclude asset impairment losses and other restructuring charges, reorganization items and other items. Management references these non-GAAP financial measures frequently in its decision making because they provide supplemental information that facilitates internal comparisons to historical operating performance of prior periods and external comparisons to competitors锟?historical operating performance. Institutional investors generally look to Adjusted EBITDA in measuring performance, among other things. The Company uses Adjusted EBITDA to facilitate quantification of planned business activities and enhance subsequent follow-up with comparisons of actual to planned Adjusted EBITDA. Free cash flow is defined as cash from operating activities minus capital expenditures plus cash from discontinued operations and the sale of assets. Management uses free cash flow to identify the amount of cash available to meet debt amortization requirements, pay dividends to stockholders or make corporate investments.

Can you understand this???? please help???
If your using this 10K to determine if you want to invest, there are a few signs that point to yes. First Ebitda(Earnings before interst,taxes,depretiation and amoritization) this companies EBITDA rose 7.3% vs last year (It means they are making money). Also it looks as if there was some restructuring going on since there was some loss there. However this could be good for the investor, with less capital expenditure in the future. Everything else is basically fluff.

%26quot;We have significantly decreased our dependence on U.S. markets, and continue to grow our international business, especially in Asia. By divesting non-core businesses and focusing on high growth/high return markets, we are continuing to execute our strategic business plan and our drive toward profitability and positive free cash flow. Sales to GM, Ford and Chrysler in the U.S., excluding discontinued operations, now account for only about 18% of global sales. Given the extremely difficult conditions in our marketplace, our results for 2006 are encouraging.%26quot;

Original (I think) website idea, what now?
I think I have an original idea for a website business. I don%26#039;t really know where to go with it next though.
How can I:-
A. Ensure that it is original (I%26#039;ve searched all over the web and can%26#039;t find it anywhere else)
B. Ensure nobody rips me off
My plan was to host a website with this business idea on a small scale.. would this make it my idea to own, or could somebody legally just copy it and use it on a bigger scale?
And also.. if I have just missed the fact that somebody else has already thought of and implemented this idea, I%26#039;m guessing I could be sued so how can I be 100% sure this doesn%26#039;t happen.
Original (I think) website idea, what now?
I can help with the what now. You can take your website idea to a web host like the one found at http://www.tobuildyour.com and they will assist you in designing your website around your ideas and help you to get targeted traffic to your site. You can get your website copyrighted. I am not sure how to ensure that your idea is original. I would assume that if your idea is original to you and that you can%26#039;t find it anywhere on the web then you are probably safe to get it started. I would suggest that you search for a professional that can register your idea. Upon registration process you should find whether or not the idea has been taken. I hope this helps you to get going on building your dreams. I am looking forward to seeing you and your website idea on the net. Keep me/us posted.

Original (I think) website idea, what now?
If someone else is already operating a similar site they can request you take your site down. If they have a patent on the site then the can sue you if you fail to take your site down.
They need to ask first though.
Reply:u have to have a patent for it to make sure it is unique .....check with patent body....alot of people register thier ideas but never implement it ....
Reply:Is it possible to copyright a website? I don%26#039;t think so. By definition anything placed on the web is in the public domain. The obvious exceptions being copyrighted material that is placed there.
Since there is no way to legally protect a website you need not be concerned with being sued. Sadly, you need not worry about being ripped off, because if it is a good idea that will indeed happen.
If your idea is truly unique, and if the website is actually going to be a marketing bonanza, then the only way to protect your %26quot;ownership,%26quot; of the idea is to mail yourself a letter describing in detail what you are proposing to do. Send the letter either via registered or certified mail, with a signature receipt required. At least this will establish the date that you had the idea.
Arthur C. Clarke, of science fiction fame, invented the Geo-synchronous communication satellite. Robert A. Heinlein, also of science fiction fame, invented the water bed. Both of these authors described their ideas in detail. Neither ever received a single copper coin for royalties or other payment.
Good luck. I look forward to seeing the new website. And, for what it is worth, I promise to not rip it off. Not capable of doing so actually.
Reply:I think you鈥檒l be OK.
You could be sued for infringing copyright if your site used components taken from another site. But as long as the design, text %26amp; images are yours you鈥檒l be OK.
As for the core idea, I doubt it can be patented. As a for example someone must have been the first to come up with the idea of Internet dating sites. But today there are 100鈥檚 of them all operating more or less in the same way.
Only if you are selling a novel and new product could you patent that, to stop people stealing it. But you can鈥檛 patent the idea of selling it via the web.
This does mean you could find copy-cat sites springing up, and you wouldn鈥檛 be able to do much about them. Particularly if based on other countries.

Reply:Keep the idea secret for as long as possible. Speak to a solicitor and get your basic idea documented and time stamped and kept in a safe. There is generally no real sure proof way of protecting an internet idea. Look at last minute.com and the immediate growth of copy cat sites. Generally if someone attempts to sue you then let them try. It will cost them a fortune. Time stamping your idea with a solicitor, magistrate or JOP will at least prove when you had your idea.
If someone else is doing the same thing then look on the brightside, at least now you know it is a viable proposition. Given the huge numbers of internet users, at least two of you are bound to have the same idea. Just do it and see what happens. if you have a genuinley viable idea, then your competition will most likley buy you out rather than attempt suing you. It%26#039;s cheaper that way!!!

How do I sue?
Long story short - I develop web applications, and someone stole my code and is hosting is as their own.
He has access to all my ASP pages, as well as my entire database - content, structure, everything.
I contacted a lawyer, and they wanted WAY too much money - I am a small home based business with little to no resources.
Can I take this to court and represent myself? How do I do so?
How do I sue?
I would contact your local FBI Office. The FBI can most likely help you out with this, they deal with alot of that online fraud stuff. Get them on the phone, ask what they can do, then if they can do something, that person that stole your codes will get a nice ride to jail, and charged with Internet Fraud, which is a major offence nowadays, and punishable by alot of years in prison.
How do I sue?
Check with Legal Aid in your city and also with Federal Burea of Investigation and report it.

What are the requirements for mailing lists with PHP MySQL?
I have a few small time clients for my web-publishing side business. I would like to offer them email lists for newsletters and such. I want to know if it is possible to have the email address that is part of their domain send out mass emailings to those who have signed up. I have a basic understanding of PHP and MySQL. I think there is a way to do this, but I do not know. Ideally, they would be able to edit the content themselves and then the PHP and MySQL would take care of the HTML in the emails, and the server that hosts the site would actually send the emails, so that they do not need to do it from their computers.
I am currently using GoDaddy for all my server/domain/mail/database needs. Do I need anything I do not already have? I just need a simple explanation of where to start, and how all the various applications work together to create and send out the emails.

Read that instead of me explaining it on here. Just follow the tutorial, if you have an understanding of PHP and MySQL you should not have any problems.
